Since the real estate bubble burst in the 1990s followed by the recession compounded by flat population growth, abandoned buildings have greatly increased in numbers in Japan. In my own experience, schools have been particularly hard hit because of the low birth rate. It's easy to find abandoned schools buildings, especially in Tokyo. Some ward governments are trying to recycle the buildings into day care centers for the elderly, artists colonies, or other civic purposes.
