Disability Protest - May 12, 2005

On May 12th, 2005, the Japan National Assembly of Disabled Person's International (DPI-Japan) together with several other major disability organizations including People First Japan staged their fourth and perhaps final demonstration in Tokyo protesting the government's decision to change social welfare benefits for people with disabilities. I have been covering this series of protests starting with the 2004.10.20 demonstration, followed by the 2004.12.13 demonstration, and the 2005.02.15 demonstration (follow the links for background information).

The May 12th event was one of the largest ones, with an estimated 4000 people participating. It was scheduled at the same time as a major Japan Disability Forum (JD) event at Hibiya Park. While the JD Forum received newspaper coverage, the much-larger DPI event continued to suffer from media suppresssion.
