Man with Doll at Antique Fair, Roseville, MN (March 2003)

The Har Mar Mall in Roseville, MN holds an antique show each Fall and Spring. About 50-80 vendors set up booths and sell everything from classic cameras to porcelain knickknacks. Collectors of all sorts including the odd anthropologist attend.

This man collects dolls and the doll he is holding is one of his prize possessions. I asked him if I could take his picture with his doll, he agreed. He asked me if I collect, I said no but that's a really beautiful doll that you have.

I love all the various elements of this photo, the tight framing (how he is constricted between the chairs and by the light in the top right), his protective and loving embrace of the doll, the eye contact, etc. Some find this to be a troubling photo, but is the "trouble" entirely in the eyes/minds of the beholder, evidence of our own societal prejudices?

From the PAW-2003 series.
